It was a humid and toasty evening in Central Texas. Brian waited until the sun began to set before he set out on his daily run.

He pulled on his running shorts, took off his shirt, and grabbed his favorite black baseball cap. As he passed the bathroom, he caught a glimpse of himself in his bathroom mirror.

Brian was a fitness instructor from LA who had just moved to Austin. He worked hard on his body, especially as the world started coming out of the covid lockdowns. 

He snapped a picture of himself and sent the picture to his boyfriend with a winking emoji face and yellow heart. 

   

Brian climbed into his truck and arrived at his favorite trail a short time later. The sun had set on the horizon. He felt the warm air on his bare skin as he stretched, watched the fire flies buzz in and out of the nearby foliage.

He began his run along the creek, there were few people on the trail at this time of day. 

   

At mile 3 the humid air began to drench his body, beading down between his ripped abdomen and pooling into his belly button. He hadn't seen another soul on the trail for the last mile.

   

Up ahead, he heard a muffled scream. He picked up his pace in order to check it out.

Rounding a bend in the trail, Brian saw a crazed man assaulting a women. His feet hit the trail with force as he sprinted towards them, catching the crazed man by surprise, Brian tackled him to the ground. 

Brian leaned over the man and held his neck tight, forcing the man to the ground. He looked up and watched as the woman scrambled to her feet, "run!" Brian said, "call for help!". 

She sprinted off around the bend. 

Suddenly, Brian felt a stabbing pain in his gut. 

He looked down beneath him and the man to see the mans fist holding the hilt of a bowie knife. It was lodged deep Brians gut, just above his belly button. 

Brian gasped in shock at the sight, he looked to the man and began to strangle him further. He felt the knife slide out of his belly, and then felt it slide back in more forcefully. 

The mans face slowly began to turn red as he suffocated beneath Brian, but as the bowie knife slide out of him again, Brian felt his arms weaken and his mind wander towards the burning sensation in his belly.

The blade slammed back into Brian, he let go of the man beneath him and rolled to the side, the blade slide out of his gut again and his back landed on the gravel trail.

The crazed man next to him gasp for air. Brian grimaced as he raised his head, he looked at the deep wound on the center of his belly, it bled profusely dripping down the sides of his stomach and soaking the ground beneath him. 

The crazed man got to his knees and crawled over on top of Brian, his knees on each side of Brians thighs. He held the bowie knife with his right hand and brought the point down straight into Brian's navel.

Brian screamed in pain and shock, his hands grasped at the mans arm holding the knife in his stomach, hopelessly trying to pull it out.

As Brian wrestled with the arm holding the blade in his navel, the mans left hand came down and his index and middle finger prodded into the previous wound above Brian's belly button. 

"What the fuck!" Brian called out as the man wriggled his fingers inside of him with a crazed look on his face. 

The man pulled the bowie knife from Brian's navel and pulled his fingers out of the other wound, he jumped to his feet and looked down at Brian one last time before running off into the woods. 

Brian felt himself fading, he looked down at his stomach, blood pulsing out of his wounds. Police rounded the corner of the trail, sprinting towards him. He watched as they knelt down beside him, their hands applied pressure to the knife wounds on his abdomen. His vision faded to black.
